This How-to guide will walk you step-by-step through adding a domain to a new WordPress website after having installed WordPress. In a previous post I talked about How-to Set up GoDaddy Managed WordPress – Fresh Install. This post is a follow up to that one and will focus on what to do after WordPress has been successfully installed. Because I am a GoDaddy Pro and Reseller I’ll be using GoDaddy as our example in this How-to guide. A BWD Managed WordPress Hosting plan will have the same steps. Let’s dig in!

Connect a Domain

After you’ve logged into your account, you’ll always see either your name or a circle shaped profile image in the top right of the screen. Click that and a drop-down menu will appear; select “My Products“. You’ll see a gray colored menu on the left of this page. Find and and click on “All Products” and from the drop-down click “Hosting“. You should see an odd-looking domain that ends in “myftpupload.com”. Just click anywhere inside that box to advance to the next step.

You’ll now be on a page titled “Website”. Look for “Add a custom domain to look professional” and click the black box with an arrow in it which you’ll find on the right.

In this next step you’ll see a popup box titled “Choose where to publish” with the domain name you purchased or a list of domain names. Select the domain you want for your website then click the “Continue” button.

From here just follow any prompts to confirm the update/changes. When finished your domain should be connected to your new WordPress Website. This page will now be titled “A WordPress Site” which will change to the name of your website later. I will go over that in another post. This is your Hosting Settings dashboard specifically for that website. For now, scroll to the bottom of that page and you should see your domain name with the word “PRIMARY” higlighted in green.

Confirm the Domain is Connected

Once you’ve confirmed your domain name is marked as primary, scroll back up to the top of the page. You’ll have a few different options at this point. “View my site” “Edit site”, and Staging site > Create.

Viewing and Editing Your WordPress Site

Clicking “View my site” will open a new window or browser tab with your newly created WordPress website with your domain name. At this point you can begin editing your website. When you click “Edit Site” you’ll be greated with your WordPress Dashboard and you’ll automatically be logged in as the admin for your new website.

That concludes this guide on Adding a Domain Name to a New WordPress Website. There are a few crucial first steps you’ll want to take now that your website is live. In the next guide I’ll go over how to create a coming soon page so you can edit your website worry-free. I’ll also go into how to create a staging site and a few more crucial first steps. If you have any trouble following this guide let me know in the comments section so I can make edits and updates to be as helpful as possible.
